The 90 Day World. How it Can bring you Success?

January 16, 2022

The 90 Day World concept is something I learned after reading Traction by Gino Wickman. It is a concept that he discovered from his own experiences in business. Wickman noticed that annual planning was useless. After setting annual goals he noticed that 90 days later things were far off track, you’d have lost sight of your original vision and things were likely to be back where you started…in chaos!!

Sound familiar? It does sound very much like nearly all new years resolutions, after a while they are non-existent and nothing really has changed.

To address this issue of getting off track over a duration of time Wickman came up with The 90 Day World. Setting a number of 90 Day objectives/targets or goals. This is called setting your rocks. The rocks are what you are focused on achieving. Over the next 90 Days, you will get busy completing the daily actions to reach these rocks. Your focus is only on the next 90 Days, no longer.

Why 90 Days?

The 90 Day idea concept comes from the natural phenomenon that human beings stumble, get off track, and lose focus roughly every 90 Days. Basically, this is as long as we can focus on the tasks to reach our objectives. To address this aspect of human nature we need to ensure our goals are broken into 90 Day periods.

How can I use the 90 Day World?

If you are reading this and set a New Years Resolution there is a high likelihood that if you haven’t broken this yet then sometime in the near future you will. The resolution was probably an annual goal. It is ok to still have this annual goal, however, you need to break this goal down into 90 Day periods, set your 90 Day rocks then commit to the actions required over the next 90 days. At around the 90 Day mark if you have gotten off track a bit, or reached your rocks it is time to lather, rinse, and repeat.

At the 90 Day point ask yourself questions like:

What were my three greatest accomplishments in the last 90 Days?
What are my expectations for the following 90 days?

By using review questions on your goals, you will learn what you need to start doing, what you need to stop doing, and what you need to continue doing to reach your goal. Set your next 90 Day rocks and go get after them.

The 90 Day world helps you break your objectives/targets and goals into a time period where you can give it your full attention. And full attention is what is required to achieve the success we all area timing for.

What next? Sit down and write down (yes, write them down) what is important to you. What do you want to achieve in 90 Days’ time? If it is an annual goal, ask what do I need to do over the next 90 Days to move me closer to this goal?

These are your rocks.

To start try setting no more than 3 rocks. Once you have this set you’ll be able to implement the daily processes (actions) needed to achieve these rocks. From here commit to these processes, these daily actions, focus on the next 90 Days and go get it!!
