Low Muscle Mass and Weakness Accelerate Aging.
February 14, 2023
Have you ever heard a 70-year-old complain that they have too much muscle mass? I’d say not. At 70, you’d be trying to have as much muscle mass as possible.
And for a good reason.
Recent research highlights that muscle mass has much to do with not only life quality but as life expectancy. Low muscle mass increases all comorbidity.
Strong people with good muscle mass age slower. Weak people with poor muscle mass age much more quickly.
Strength and, in particular adequate muscle mass put the brakes on biological aging.
And this is why resistance training (Strength training) should be the main focus for all populations. Strength training will help you increase and maintain lean body tissue (muscle mass). The older you get, the more important strength training is.
And this message is especially for any woman who is worried about bulking up from weight training. It can be frustrating as a coach that many ladies avoid strength training. Many only want to focus on cardio because they worry that weights will make them bulky (Let me tell you it won’t). Cardio is great, and I am not suggesting no one should not be doing some form of cardio training. The problem is that too much cardio will strip you of your life-saving muscle mass. If you are female, you shouldn’t avoid weight training; you should embrace it. Get strong, and watch your metabolic health improve.
