Obstacles Will Be Part of the Process.
February 28, 2023
When you decide to take on a lifestyle change with the purpose of improving your health and fitness, you will come across something that no marketing or sales promise will tell you:
You will experience and come against obstacles.
This you can guarantee.
For some reason, most diet and exercise programs convince people that their programs/plans will be easy. All you need to do is take on their advice by following on with their promotion with an ease of compliance, and it will be plain sailing.
The truth. It will NOT!
Lifestyle change is anything but easy.
Lifestyle changes (whether it is for fat loss, improved performance, increased well-being, etc.) will always come with obstacles as it involves the changing of habits and personal growth. Two things that will always present obstacles.
During any change, you will experience what we refer to as good days and bad days; I am sure we have all experienced both of these days, one where everything seems like a breeze, then others where nothing seems to go right at all.
This is part of the journey; Truth is, you will have easy days, and you will have tough days. Days when you feel relaxed and days when everything is in a panic. Some days you’ll feel motivated and inspired to do well; other days, you’ll be demotivated and want to quit.
And what happens when obstacles do pop up? Unfortunately for many, they do quit. It is the expectation that change will be easy, that a certain program or plan is promoted so well that all you need to do is participate, and everything will be ok.
This mindset is what sets us up for failure. The mindset needed when we go into lifestyle change is to expect and welcome challenges. As Ryan Holiday points out in his book, Obstacles are the Way. Without obstacles, we may never experience real growth or lasting change.
Know that with any change comes challenges. You need to understand this before you start. And when challenges and obstacles arise, accept they are part of the process. Some days may even feel like a failure. And this is fine; without some form of failure, there is no success. Failure is only ever permanent if you quit; don’t fight it, as we will all experience it at some point.
The most important thing is using your challenges as fuel to get better. You will have some wins and losses. The most important thing is to learn from it all, stay in the battle, and focus on your consistency.
