Are you training to look a certain way or prioritise your health? It’s a question that deserves more than just a passing thought, considering the profound impact our fitness choices can have on our overall well-being.
Let’s face it: the fitness industry is flooded with images of chiseled bodies, six-pack abs, and the promise of quick fixes to achieve that perfect physique. While aesthetics undoubtedly motivate many to hit the gym, it’s essential to recognise that proper fitness goes beyond appearances, and we should appreciate all body shapes and sizes. Being healthy can look very different from the “ideal” (and unrealistic) images posted on social media.
The Aesthetic Temptation
It’s natural to be drawn to the allure of a sculpted body. After all, who doesn’t want to look and feel confident in their skin? However, the obsession with aesthetics can sometimes lead us down a slippery slope of extreme diets, excessive cardio, and unsustainable workout routines. The danger lies in pursuing an idealised image at the expense of our overall health.

The goal is to live longer and enjoy a higher quality of life throughout the journey while appreciating and being comfortable in our own bodies.

Maybe the sweet spot lies in finding a harmonious balance between training for looks and training for health. We all want to look like our training is paying off. It’s about embracing the idea that a well-rounded fitness routine can deliver both aesthetic satisfaction and long-term health benefits. And this is very individual. We can have two very healthy people who look very different. Your body will show this if you train for health and achieve it. The unrealistic expectation to look a certain way should not be a burden for any of us.
