Can’t? Or Do You Mean Don’t?

September 30, 2021

When people say “can’t” do they actually mean “don’t”?

In instances when it is in relation to health, fitness, and fat loss this is likely to be very true, and it comes down to choices, lets take a look at a few common scenarios:

People say, “I can’t stop eating junk food”…if they are honest with themselves the statement really should be “I don’t really want to stop eating junk food”.

And another…

“I can’t find time to exercise”…but they have plenty of time to watch TV and sit scrolling on their phones…again the real statement should be “I don’t really want to find time to exercise.”

Maybe it is a worthy thing to consider, if you’re finding yourself saying “I can’t”, rephrase it and see if it is actually the word don’t that you are really looking for.

The big take away in all of this is when people are saying they can’t do something they are normally using it as an excuse, it gives the mindset of it is out of reach and it is ok if you fail. Can’t gives them acceptance that it is out of reach. In reality though the truth is that things are in reach, but don’t want to do these things, and this could be for a number of reasons.

When we search for why we don’t want to do things it can give us direction and clarity on why we “do” want to do things and why it is important to you. Getting on the right track starts with acceptance, getting rid of the word “can’t”, taking ownership and addressing any barriers holding you back.
