Don’t Lose Weight…Build Muscle and Reduce BodyFat.
What if one directive that was meant to help you improve your health had the opposite impact?
Let me explain.
Take, for example, an overweight person who goes to the Doctor or another health professional and they are given the common prescription of “You need to lose weight.”
It is these five words that can potentially lead to bigger problems if you were to listen and join the path to losing weight. The directive to lose weight can lead to unhealthy and unsustainable actions like extreme calorie deficits and crazy amounts of cardio training. You may lose some weight in the short term, but you’ve also probably impacted your metabolic health through likely loss of muscle and a slowing of your metabolism.
And as it is unsustainable, the end result will be the regaining of any weight you’ve lost, creating even further implications for your health.
The answer is in the attitude and focuses on what needs to be done if you are advised to lose weight (Or for anyone wanting to shed some weight).
And this attitude is…Don’t Lose Weight. Instead, Build Muscle and Reduce Body Fat.
Over the recent years, we have been told that having healthy levels of body fat is crucial to good health. This is true, but this led to the notion of losing. More specifically, losing weight. This is a dangerous message as we need to avoid losing muscle. We now are learning that muscle mass is critical, and having low muscle mass is devasting to our health. If muscle decreases, the chance of illness and injury increases.
Muscle is vital to good health, especially as we progress through life.
As we age, the mission for us all is to retain as much muscle as we can; there will come a time in your life when it will be very difficult to add any muscle. We must aim to build muscle.
The attitude is to build muscle and reduce body fat. This is the best scenario for long-term health and vitality.
The message is this…actively fight muscle loss by aiming to build muscle through strength and resistance training in order to stay healthy and vital. If the focus is only on losing through excessive cardio and extreme calorie restriction, we will weaken ourselves by losing muscle along with fat. (Ladies, no, you will not get big and bulky, you will get toned and lean!)
The new attitude is not to lose weight but to build muscle and reduce body fat.
