Embracing January’s Motivational Wave Without the New Year’s Resolutions

January 1, 2024

January rolls around, and there’s this buzz in the air – a mix of hope, determination, and the scent of freshly opened planners. While New Year’s resolutions might not be everyone’s cup of tea (and let’s be honest, sometimes they’re more like an over-ambitious espresso), there’s no denying the infectious motivation and focus that the first month of the year brings. So, how can we ride this wave of January enthusiasm without getting bogged down in the often unrealistic and restrictive nature of traditional resolutions? Let’s explore.

The January Effect: More Than Just Resolutions

January is like the Monday of the year – it’s a natural starting point, a clean slate. The energy is different. People are buzzing with goals and plans, and it’s hard not to get caught up in the excitement. But if you’re not a fan of the “New Year, New Me” mantra, that’s okay. I’m with you; I think it’s bullshit. (see my last post on this)

However, in saying this, you can still harness the January vibe to your advantage. Use this energy to add a little extra to your routine. Maybe join a class or start a strength program– not because it’s a resolution, but because the vibe is just right.

Alternatives to Resolutions

Monthly or 90-Day Challenges: Instead of a year-long commitment, try something for just a month. It’s less daunting, and who knows, it might stick. Personally, I prefer 90-Day Challenges. This amount of time gives plenty of time for impactful changes, and it is around about the time we can focus on any one thing before distraction sets in. Themed Goals: Rather than specific resolutions, set a theme for the year. For example, ‘Year of Health’ or ‘Year of Learning’. This offers flexibility and creativity in how you achieve it.

Habit Building: Focus on small daily habits rather than big, overwhelming goals. Tiny changes can lead to big results over time.

Reflect and Refocus: Use January to reflect on the past year and refocus on what’s important to you. This doesn’t have to be about setting goals but realigning your priorities.

Justin Sua recommends asking yourself these questions in reflection on 2023:

  • What am I grateful happened in 2023?
  • What hard things did I overcome in 2023?
  • What did 2023 teach me?
  • What do I need to START doing?
  • What do I need to STOP doing?
  • What do I need to KEEP doing?
  • What’s my WHY?

The Power of Community

There’s something powerful about being part of a community, even if you’re not playing by the same rules. The gym is buzzing, your social media feeds are full of inspirational posts leading into 2024, and everyone seems to promote healthy outlooks for the year. Use this energy to find what works for you.

Harnessing the January Energy
Get Inspired: Let the energy around you spark new ideas or interests.
Stay Realistic: Remember, it’s okay to be inspired without overcommitting and making resolutions.
Be Flexible: Use January’s momentum to try new things, but don’t feel the need to stick to something if it’s not working for you.

Do January, Your Way

In the end, 2024 isn’t a change to the world; it is a date that indicates we’ve traveled one more time around the Sun. January, too, is just a month, but it’s a month brimming with potential. Whether you’re setting goals, trying new things, or simply riding the wave of motivation, it’s all about finding what works for you. Embrace the energy, but stay true to yourself. After all, the best plan is the one that you can stick to.
