Focus on Doing over Not Doing

February 20, 2022

It is a great thing that people what to change things up to improve their health.

What starts out as a positive initiative can however end in disappointment with how we approach the changes we are aiming for.

Why?

Because of our focus, we take an elimination focus, cutting out something or stopping something that we haven’t really planned for. Straight away we are fighting against our own willpower. And I can tell you that you cannot beat your willpower forever without careful planning. Putting strategies in place so it is not a battle of holding out against your willpower.

One such strategy is the focus on addition, not elimination.  Adding things into your day instead of subtracting, or doing vs. not doing.

Let’s take a simple example. And an example many of us struggle with is hydration. We can aim to add more water to our day, we could plan to add in planned drink times, or drink a certain amount of water over the day. We are adding a great habit in place of focusing on a negative. If soft drinks or coffees are a problem for you, focusing on adding more water will help with changing this habit as more water is likely to result in fewer of the other types of drinks.

This same principle of doing (adding) vs not doing (eliminating) can be used across all areas of health.

For our health and fitness, we could be aiming to accumulate more physical activity, it could be as simple as adding in a 30-minute walk every day. Heck while you are on that walk kill two birds with one stone…put on a self-development or educational podcast to help expand your personal growth. There is a win-win addition.

Our for sleep it maybe going to bed earlier, adding 30 minutes a night to your sleep will be beneficial for all.

And the biggest one where elimination seems to be the go-to, but in fact, addition could be the best game-changer for you is food.

One of the best eating strategies is to add…yes you read this right. Add more veggies, add more protein, or add in a piece of fruit. All addition strategies that can help. More protein will help you feel more satisfied between meals, more vegies provide important health benefits, while a piece of fruit can help replace that sugar-filled treat you may be reaching for. You will find these additions will help erase the bad food choices as they will help prevent cravings.

If there is an area of your life that you want to improve or change, then make sure you consider what you can add to help. Most people think the other way, they think about what they need to eliminate, and they absolutely may need to eliminate, however, addition is a much better mindset, it will help you make improvements over time where it isn’t a continual fight against your willpower.
