Keeping Your Goals Top of Mind

March 8, 2022

Today’s post comes from the book “Be Like The Best” by Anthony Renna.

Renna interviews the top S&C coaches to find out about their processes, their ideas on success, and the habits that have helped create their successes. For me, it was a really insightful read. The quality of the shared knowledge is exceptional.

The passage of the book I wanted to share is from the Strength & Conditioning coach Justin Kavanaugh. Kavanaugh has some tremendous tips on goals and the importance of keeping your goals at the top of your mind.

This can be a problem for many once the motivation that helped create the goal has waned. We lose focus of our goal and it slowly drifts out of reach, never to be achieved.

Kavanaugh lists 10 strategies to help with keeping your goals your goals. Tips that you can use yourself to help you achieve and be successful.

10 strategies to keep your goals top of your mind.

1 – Make a word document of your goals and take a screen shot to use as the wallpaper on your phone. It’s best to put it on the lock screen so you see it more often.

2 – Put the screenshot on your computer as a screensaver.

3 – Print out the document and put it in a place you will see often.

4 – Write the goals down each morning in your journal or in a notebook.

5 – Set recurring reminders in your calendar that pop up to remind you of your goals and when they’re due. Use the idea of having the reminder set to say “Did you do anything to accomplish your goals today?”

6 – Make writing out your goals part of your workday shutdown.

7 – Put your goals on a whiteboard where you’ll see them first thing in the morning, such as in your bathroom.

8 – Add a “goal progress report” to-do to your calendar for the end of the week on Fridays or the beginning of the week on Monday mornings. Review the things you did the previous week that brought you closer to your goals, and what has to be done for the next week for greater progress.

9 – Make sure your accountability partner knows what your goals are and pushes you to achieve them.

10 – Have an accountability partner text you every weekday morning to ask what you’re doing today to move forward on your goals. Do the same for that person.

Keeping your goals top of mind is the best way to achieve them. You need laser beam focus and with all the distractions of the modern world, you will need all the help you can get!
