The Maui Habit. A Tiny Habit with Big Impact.
August 10, 2022
Recently I’ve started to read Tiny Habits by BJ Fogg.
The first major thing I have taken out of the book is the daily practice of the Maui Habit. It is a 5-second habit to get the day off to a good, positive mindset start.
The Maui Habit is the first example of a tiny habit that BJ Fogg shares in his book, Tiny Habits, The Small Changes That Change Everything. The Maui Habit explained:
The Maui Habit takes a few seconds and very little effort. And yet it has an impact. When you wake up in the morning and put your feet on the ground, say to yourself:
“Today is going to be a great day!”
Here’s why it works.
The Maui Habit works for three reasons, what BJ Fogg calls the ‘anatomy’ of a tiny habit:
- It is ‘anchored’ in a specific moment (part of your existing routine)
- It is super easy to do
- It feels good
This last point is critical. The habit is not complete until you’ve added a smile and taken a moment to celebrate your first achievement of the day!
Can it make a difference? It can make a huge difference. It is similar to Admiral William McRaven’s Make your Bed habit. A habit that has you making your bed first thing every morning. You have accomplished the day’s first task by doing this (making your bed). It will give you a sense of pride, encouraging you to do another task and another task throughout the day. It sets you up for a successful day.
BJ Fogg’s Maui Habit is the same; by completing this affirmation, it gives your mindset a positive outlook, and you can celebrate your first achievement of the day.
I will add the Maui Habit to my day and include it with my current morning rituals. At the moment, my mornings consist of putting my right foot onto the ground when I first get out of bed. I do this to start the day off on the right foot. Yep, I seriously do. It is like the Maui Habit. It puts me in a frame of mind to win the morning and attack the day. The second thing I do is make my bed.
From here, I have three other main objectives, Exercise in the morning, drink 500ml of water as soon as possible, and get some sunlight. It has all become routine for me; these habits help me win the mornings. Except for the sunlight, I complete all these things before 5:00 am. And it does make a big difference; if I don’t get these things done, then the day is never as fruitful.
As I said, I will add the simple task of the Maui Habit each morning. I am sure it will enhance my current routine, bringing more accomplishment and positivity to my day. I will let you know what I experience after a few months.
Why not try adding it to your morning rituals? I am a big believer in starting the day right; this is why I find time to exercise, drink water, and get sunlight each day. These simple tasks bring health and goodness to the body and the mind.
