The Power of Starting: How Small Beginnings Lead to Great Rewards
December 22, 2023
I read a quote this morning, and I must admit that this article comes from my response and the ideas I had from it. I wanted to respond and share it with you all.
James Clear, a maestro of habits and productivity, nailed it with this:
“Many of the best things in life grow along the way.
Start hanging out with someone and love grows along the way.
Start exercising and motivation grows along the way.
Start writing and inspiration grows along the way.
Start now and let the feeling follow.”
Let’s unpack this, shall we? I can honestly say that I resonate with what Clear is saying. I, for one, have experienced it; I guess this is why I own a gym, and am writing this here blog.
Starting with Someone: The Growth of Love
Many people join a certain gym to get fit and improve their health but end up staying for the community and the friends they make. Imagine you’re at your local gym, struggling away with a few others. At first, it is a polite smile, a helping hand, a tip, or even a high five after being in the trenches together. Fast forward a few months, and you’ve got a workout buddy and even a lifelong friend. That’s how love takes root and grows in its many forms. It’s not about grand gestures; it’s about those small, consistent acts of kindness and camaraderie.
And before I move on, remember Love is a VERB. It is shown through your actions for the people you are close to.
Starting to Exercise: The Rise of Motivation
We’ve all been there – staring at our sneakers, thinking of a million reasons to skip the gym. But here’s the kicker: once you start, motivation follows. It’s not about feeling pumped before you hit a class or session; it’s about finding your stride and rhythm (Also known as Consistency). Each drop of sweat becomes a reason to keep going. Suddenly, you’re not just working out but building a lifestyle.
And again, before moving on, let me reveal a few untruths about motivation. Most people think it is motivation that leads to action. This is putting the cart before the horse. The best way to motivate is through action. Action leads to results that lead to motivation.
Starting to Write: The Flow of Inspiration
Writing, much like exercise, can start as a challenge. But as you jot down your thoughts, clarity emerges, followed by a rush of inspiration. You begin to understand your journey better and, in doing so, inspire others to start theirs (Well I hope this is how it works).
Let me share my own experience. In January 2020, I started writing; I felt it was important for my well-being and development. I really wanted to be consistent with it; you could say it was a goal not just to write every day but to become a writer. Since 2020, I have written—750 or more words daily for 1440 days. My current writing streak sits at 951 days straight, with only one day missed in the 1440 days of achieving the goal of 750 words. Every day, I am inspired to write; it has become a habit that is never missed.
Starting Now: Letting the Feeling Follow
Here’s the deal: waiting for the perfect moment is like waiting for a unicorn to show up at your door – it’s not happening. The perfect time is a myth. The best time to start is now* (*Disclaimer: I understand that Christmas could possibly be the exception to this rule, but you get the drift). Whether it’s a new nutrition plan, exercise regimen, or a writing goal. Start small, but start today. The feelings of accomplishment, joy, and pride will follow. Trust me, they always do.
In the end, it’s all about the journey. It’s about the friendships you forge, the motivation you muster, and the inspiration you ignite in yourself and others. Every step you take, no matter how small, is a part of a larger movement towards a healthier, happier you.
