Your Mental Game is as Important as the Physical Game.

October 4, 2021

The mental game is as important as the physical game. We spend a lot of time focusing on the physical, we do fitness classes, we run, we lift weights, we do Yoga & Pilates etc.

Their is a lot of focus in the fitness world on keeping the body in shape, but what about the mind, what are we doing for the mind?

Zach Mathews shared this idea; I like to think of the human mind as a garden. Good thoughts are planted, Bad thoughts are weeds; they spring up spontaneously, unsummoned, and hard to kill. If we don’t weed the garden though, the bad thoughts will take over and spoil the garden. If you do weed the garden though, don’t forget you still need to water and fertilise your good thoughts for them to grow and flourish.

Plant enough positive thoughts with regular watering then the weeds will have nowhere to grow.

A simple principle, but it’s truth is profound.

Mental strength and positivity can be trained and should be trained, just like running, swimming, or strength training. It’s a process that always works. Positivity is a choice. Make sure you’re choosing correctly each day, build that habit.

How can we train positivity each day?

Gratitude…..you can use a notepad, a journal, or even an app. Make a planned time for practicing your gratitude, it may be first thing in the morning or it could be the last thing before bed at night. Make a time that works for you. Try to write down a few things per day you are grateful for, it could be family related, work related, personal accomplishments, or even as simple as being grateful for waking up in the morning. I’ve personally used Gretchen Rubin’s “The Happiness Project”…a journal book that encourages you to write one gratitude sentence a day for five years.

When you are focused on gratitude, things you are grateful for will expand. It could change your outlook on life.

Journal Writing……similar to gratitude, journal writing let’s us “feed the garden and also weed the garden”. You can use prompts for each days writing or write freestyle. Journal writing will allow daily for reflection, thoughts, and experiences. Journal writing lets you get things out of your mind…it is a release of negativity and a promoter of positivity, it puts an end to negative experiences that we may hold on to if not released…while also helping you see bright spots and good things in your life.

Helping Others…….. Learning the importance of giving over receiving is one of life’s most fulfilling lessons. When you help others it brings positivity to the other person which will bring positivity to you. Helping others creates a Ripple Effect that can be very powerful.

Keep Active/Exercising………….you’ve probably heard the saying “an idle mind is the devils workshop”. In my own experiences this has been very true, when I’m not focused on daily objectives or if I skip exercising for a period of time it always has a negative affect on my mental health. Keeping active may include having a hobby to focus on outside of work, it could be as simple as walking everyday (walking is one of the best creative processes we can have, make sure you focus on positivity though when walking). Exercising in an environment of supportive people will promote healthy positivity.
