How to Navigate the Festive Season
December 10, 2023
The festive season. It is a season to be jolly, with lots of social occasions with your friends and family. It should be a time to enjoy, and I encourage everyone to relax and have a good time with those you love the most.
However, saying that doesn’t mean we should let our health and fitness goals take a complete holiday.
As mentioned, I encourage everyone to enjoy themselves over the festive season. I want to share a few tips to ensure you both have a pleasurable festive season with your well-being intact.
1. Set Realistic Goals
Let’s face it; the holidays are an array of tempting treats. Instead of aiming to avoid them altogether, set realistic goals. Maybe it’s committing to several weekly workouts, choosing healthier BBQ options, or limiting alcoholic drinks to a set number. Small, achievable goals will keep you on track. Set realistic goals that will let you indulge to an extent but not totally lose control.
For example, Rather than swearing off desserts entirely, aim to savor one small treat mindfully, truly enjoying every bite.
2. Keep up the Hydration
It’s likely to be hot; we are accustomed to experiencing scorching temperatures during the festive season. This tip is super important for a few reasons. But whether you’re celebrating in the sun is an unseasoningly cold day, staying hydrated is vital. Opt for water over sugary drinks, and if you’re indulging in a bit of the bubbly, alternate with H2O. We drink to enjoy company, not to get obliterated.
For example, put ample bottled water in if you are taking an esky to a party. Every second drink, reach for water. Yeah, and I get it; it’s not sexy, but it is smart.
3. Squeeze in Quick Workouts
Finding time for a workout can be challenging between family gatherings and festive feasts. Fear not! Short, effective workouts are your secret weapon. High-intensity interval training (HIIT) or a brisk walk can do wonders for your energy levels and keep those holiday calories in check. Check out our timetable over the festive period; we will be running sessions, so making it a priority to get a few sessions each week.
If you can’t reach the gym, gather your friends and family and walk. Walking is one of the most connective activities we can do.
4. Plan Your Plate
The buffet table can be a battlefield, but you’re armed with knowledge. Load up on colorful veggies, lean proteins, and whole grains before eyeing the dessert table. This will make you less likely to overindulge in less nutritious options.
For example, share your favorite healthy holiday recipes, like a delicious and nutritious salad or a lean protein dish. Bonus points if it’s a hit at the family gathering!
5. Prioritise Sleep
Amidst the festivities, don’t neglect the importance of a good night’s sleep. Lack of sleep can wreak havoc on your immune system and leave you feeling less than festive. On top of this, studies show that when we do not get enough sleep, we tend to make poorer nutrition choices the next day. Aim for 7-9 hours of shut-eye each night to keep your body and mind in tip-top shape.
Remember, the key is balance. Enjoy the festivities, savour the moments, and keep the focus on your health and well-being. The festive season is a special time, and we should embrace it. Fill it with joy, love, and good health.
Happy Holidays, Shaun.
